Lactic acid bacterium Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TENSIA® (DSM 21380)
L. plantarum TENSIA® is a lactobacillus of human origin isolated from a healthy Estonian child, the safety of which has been repeatedly studied in test tubes, laboratory animals and healthy volunteers. TENSIA® was discovered and studied by BioCC OÜ researchers in cooperation with researchers from the University of Tartu and has been deposited in the international microbial collection Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH under the number DSM 21380.
The functional characteristics of L. plantarum TENSIA®:
-
produces metabolites that lower blood pressure;
-
protects the body from excessive oxidative stress;
-
reduces the risk of food infections by suppressing enteropathogens (disease-causing bacteria) in dairy products and enhancing the body's resistance to intestinal infections;
-
supplies the body with the L. plantarum TENSIA® strain, which enhances the body's natural resistance to several bacteria that cause intestinal infections;
-
increases the overall count of beneficial lactobacilli in the intestines, ensuring the breakdown of nutrients into more easily absorbable compounds.
The health benefits of L. plantarum TENSIA® result from several bioactive compounds that the bacterium produces as a result of its activity:
-
Special peptides with a vasodilating effect;
-
Nitric oxide (NO). NO protects the intestinal mucosa from damage, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and lowers blood pressure;
-
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA is a fatty acid with health benefits similar to those of omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oil;
-
Polyamines (putrescine, spermidine). The physiological effects of polyamines are directed towards immune cells and the regulation of inflammatory responses. They also have anti-allergic effects, stimulate protein synthesis, and improve the condition of the intestinal mucosa.
The L. plantarum TENSIA® strain has been granted an Estonian (EE05340), European (EP2309870), and Russian (RU2477750) patent:
"Isolated microorganism strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TENSIA® DSM 21380 as an antimicrobial and blood pressure-lowering probiotic, food and composition containing it, and the use of the microorganism in the preparation of blood pressure-lowering medicine and a method for decreasing the effect of non-starter lactobacilli in food."

L. plantarum TENSIA® has been awarded numerous international accolades.
-
Finland's main quality-innovation prize in 2010, personally presented by the President of the Republic of Finland, Mrs. Tarja Halonen (TENSIA® properties were evaluated by independent Finnish scientific experts);
-
gold medal at the Korean International Woman Inventions Exposition 2009 (KIWIE 2009);
-
special award at the 2009 EUWIIN (European Union Woman Inventors & Innovators Network) conference and exhibition of women's inventions in Helsinki (Südamejuust Harmony®).
